Set in the heart of the tiny village of Garzon, the villa exudes rustic chic and simplicity from the moment you step foot through the gate that separates the house and garden from the village. From the outside the façade of the house promises little; a squat pinky-red structure that suggests two different properties have been knocked together which makes the stylish interior all the more surprising. The house was the first in the village to be commissioned from chef Francis Mallmann’s short-lived sideline in construction and was designed by architect Diego Montero whose studio is responsible for dozens of the most revered houses along the coast over the last 15 years.

The house is set back from the road and sandwiched between two tiny art galleries with a private, good-sized garden and pool to the rear of the property.

The village of Garzon is a short drive from the increasingly will known and fashionable beach village of Jose Ignacio, yet the village it self is set in gently rolling hills and unspoiled countryside and the sleepy hamlet seems like a throw back in time, world away from the coastal party scene. Its here that South America's best-known chef, Francis Mallmann, has chosen to locate his latest restaurant venture as part of a charming 5 bedroom country hotel which has been wildly praised from all corners. This acclaimed restaurant is a very pleasant 5 minute stroll across the palm-lined plaza which in itself is a lovely place to linger with a drink or a book on one of its shaded benches.

The villa offers extremely comfortable accommodation with a huge master-suite and two adjoining double rooms (with queen-sized double beds) that share a bathroom. A very large open plan kitchen opens on to a vast high-ceiling dinning and living room; a good size garden and pool lie to the back.

A traditional parrilla (bbq grill) is at the heart of a second brick-lined courtyard with a well-stocked supply of firewood and a table and benches for outdoor meals. By day the area is beautifully shaded by a 12 meter high Anacahuita tree and it is gently lit by night allowing dinner to drift on into the early hours.

The village is often toted in the press – and featured in the New Your Times list of 52 destinations to visit in 2016 - as having a wild-west feel with horsemen riding by, single story houses, grazing Herefords and sandy roads. The surrounding countryside has been likened to a South American take on Tuscany, but with the development of the Garzon Bodega and winery it reminds us more of Napa, yet amid this rural scene you have superb restaurants in the village and the beaches, restaurants, glamour and buzz of José Ignacio just 25-odd minutes away and that can be dipped into when you feel like it. Its a very pleasant mix and it makes for a great family holiday, a pampering romantic break or for a week's Epicurean indulgence with selected friends.

Area description

Pueblo Garzón is close enough to the beaches and restaurants of Jose Ignacio (25 km) to be able to dip in and out of the best the coast has to offer at will and for house guests to enjoy a morning swim in the sea when the urge strikes. The nearest beach is about a 20-minute drive from the house and is virtually deserted even at the busiest times of the year. The water is bracing.

Laguna Garzón is a fantastic place to learn to windsurf and kite surf, sports which are taking Uruguay by force, as you will see on any breezy day on the coast.

To make your arrival at the property as relaxing as possible, we suggest we stock the kitchen and fridges with a customized grocery shop prior to your trip. This means that you will arrive to a kitchen full of food, a fridge full of cold drinks and that the first meal can be served shortly after your arrival. This service is available for an extra charge.

CAR HIRE
Car hire is recommended. Cars be can be rented locally in Montevideo or Punta del Este and we are happy to help with these arrangements.

Best Bits

  • This is a wonderful property to experience this remote and rural village. Simple by design and favouring the traditional over the more luxurious this house is suited to a family, a couple or a small group of friends who enjoy life's simplest pleasures; good food, time well spent, country living, long walks and great riding in a buccholic and timeless setting
  • Wonderful rides can be arranged with a local gaucho with horses provided to suit all levels of experience (arranged locally for extra charge). A full asado or picnic can be arranged in the campo to make a memorable full day's expedition
  • Having a pool to cool off in is a must in the heat of the summer months
  • Children of all ages are very welcome
  • Bird watchers will find plenty to keep them occupied from dawn to dusk

Bear in Mind

  • There is no cable TV (in fact no TV at all), no air-conditioning and Wi-fi reception, while usually good, can slow down or even drop for a few hours at a time without warning. Wi-fi is not fitted in this property, but can be installed for your stay with previous notice and for extra charge
  • The village has several well-stocked almacenes which are adequate for most food or wine shopping, but do not offer great variety of produce. Jose Ignacio is the nearest place to offer shops with more choice available and where there is a good general store, baker, an excellent butcher and wine merchant (not to mention a handful of world famous restaurants)

• A one off US$ 300 booking fee is charged for all reservations
• A 50% non-refundable deposit is required to secure any booking, with the balance due no later than 60 days before the date of arrival. If the booking is made within 60 days of the date of arrival, then the full value of the rental is required
• Security deposit is usually 10% of the total amount of the booking (or a minimum of US$ 1,000) and should be paid with the balance. Usually it will be returned within 10 working days after departure if there are no damages or outstanding payments to be settled upon departure
