One of the nicest homes in the Club del Mar, the villa has a great position, close to both the Clubhouse and the Beach which is about 100 meters from the house. Both in terms of style and lay-out the four bedroom house is a perfectly designed family beach-house, although it lends itself equally to couples or small groups of friends as the living areas, both inside and out, are open plan.

In this part of the world where there is usually little rain in summer and daylight last until 10pm, life is best enjoyed outdoors and the villa is perfectly set up to make the best of the long summer days and nights. A huge wooden deck is set up with all the essentials of summer living: a traditional parrilla (bbq grill) is built in (a good supply of fire wood is laid in for before your arrival and expert tuition on the art over grilling over fire will be provided with real pleasure); a long wooden dinning table with room for a dozen or more; a spacious lounge area, set in front of an outdoor fireplace and lit at night by a rustic chandelier. A 16 meter long swimming pool sits in the middle of the deck and is framed by the wide veranda on one side and a sundeck, dotted with palm trees, on the other. Wooden steps lead down to a large garden and lawn that is perfect for impromptu games of soccer, frisbee or cricket.

Wooden sunbeds with mattress in thick white cotton are lined along the garden side of the pool facing back towards the house and there is a separate pavilion with a long sofa and low table which is ideal for afternoon naps, sun-kissed games of chess and sundowners.

Inside the house, accessed from the deck through sliding doors, is a fully equipped open-plan kitchen, a second dinning area with seating for 10 and a sitting-room with two 3-seater sofas in front of a fireplace, backed by well-stocked book shelves. Opening onto the deck at the opposite end of the house is an air-conditioned TV-cum-play room set up with sofas along two walls and a low table that ideal for children’s games.

Three of the four bedrooms are also located on the ground floor. Two twin-bedded rooms share a bathroom and there is a good size suite with a queen-size double bed. The Master Suite is located on the first floor and has picture windows on two sides, both of which are equipped with blackout blinds to keep out the morning sun. All bedrooms have split air-conditioning.

The décor and design of the home is light and airy and it’s coastal location is reflected in the materials used; white polished cement floors; floor to ceiling windows and the large wooden deck. The two outdoor fireplaces (one housing the all-important grill) are clad with sand-coloured stones and the roof of the veranda is made of corrugated sheet aluminum supported by rough cut Eucalyptus beams lined with bamboo slating, a style used to great effect along the coast and one that is at once both practical and stylish.

Set right on the beach and close enough to walk into the village, the Club del Mar is one of the best locations to be based for a holiday in José Ignacio. Add to this the availability of the club’s well maintained tennis courts, a Club House with large pool and a good restaurant and a beach club with full service it is easy to understand why the Club del Mar is so sought after. While many guests will rent a car during their stay, the beauty of the Club del Mar is that pretty much everywhere in José Ignacio and surrounds can be reached on foot or by bicycle.

The physical appearance of this small town has changed little over the past decade. For much of the year, the sandy streets of the former fishing village on the country’s Atlantic coast are silent and un-trodden, the avant-garde designer houses half-hidden behind modest fishing shacks, and tumbledown cottages shuttered and empty. Even its grassy plaza is unadorned by anything more showy than a bed of lavender. Yet once a year, artists, aristocrats, and A-list celebrities transform the coastline into South America’s most exclusive — yet determinedly rustic — year-end enclave.
Described as one of the hippest places on the planet at New Year and there is little doubt that, along with Trancoso in North-east Brazil, José Ignacio can make a strong claim on being the hottest place in South America to party in the New Year. First impressions of José Ignacio, the pueblo, is that it looks like a film set and this feeling is only heightened by the glamorous extras that throng the streets, cafes and the two beaches, the mansa and the brava. Nestled in sand dunes overlooking an endless beach, Parador La Huella is everyone’s favourite restaurant and its tables and bar are packed from the time it opens at midday until it closes sometime in the early hours. The menu is perfect for the beach – grilled brotola (a substantial white-fish that gets hauled from the ocean in front of the restaurant), crispy-thin pizzas, oven-charred baby squid, a sushi bar and, of course, the best steaks in the world are perennials on a menu that otherwise changes daily – and the service is snappy and informal. Prices are fair even in high season, the coffee reaches the table piping hot and the rosé is served icy cold. If only all beach bars were made this way. The only price to pay is the wait for a table in the season, not least as the secret is out about this part of the coast

Yet, even at the busiest times when parked Porsches and SUV’s clog the sandy streets, there are still good and rather more down-to-earth options available. Manolo’s, the world’s most glamorous butcher’s shop, sells huge milanesa sandwiches to bikini-clad beauties and further up the street the little supermarket does a brisk trade in iced champagne, emapanadas, cigarettes and freshly baked bread. Despite the increasing hype and invariable comparisons to Ibiza or the Hamptons, Marbella or St Tropez, ‘as they were back in the day’, it’s a place that hasn’t sold out and clearly hasn’t lost its soul. This, I am sure, is down to Uruguay herself, the most down-to-earth, least pretentious country in the region, whose greatest asset is its people. It is true this coast has the feel of a previous era when the world was a simpler, better place: the endless under-developed coastline; the absence of drunken hordes by night; empty beaches by day; all coupled with the fact that it still not that easy to get to from anywhere else. But what it is most of all, it’s essence, is that it this little corner of South America still has a style that is all of its own that rubs its magic dust on everyone who visits. Prepare to be seduced.

To make your arrival at the property as relaxing as possible, we suggest we stock the kitchen and fridges with a customized grocery shop prior to your trip. This means that you will arrive to a kitchen full of food, a fridge full of cold drinks and that the first meal can be served shortly after your arrival.

Car hire is recommended, but not essential. Cars can be rented locally and we are happy to help with these arrangements.
