Located a 3 minute walk outside the small fishing village of Moreré on the island of Boipeba in Bahia, the villa is positioned on a lush tropical hillside with a wondrous panorama of sea, sky and forest and perfectly placed to take advantage of the jaw-dropping island sunsets. To north and south palm fringed white sand beaches stretch off into the distance and a network of coral reefs turn the ocean into a painters palette of turquoise, blues and aquamarines. The house is 150m from a tropical beach straight out of Central Casting, voted second best in all Brazil.
The house is designed to take full advantage of the view (and those sunsets!) and is built on two levels each one with a unique aspect. It’s elevated position also gives it the advantage of a constant gentle breeze, essential during the hot summer days and nights in keeping the house fresh and aired (there is no air-conditioning).
Tropical hard wood verandas connect the rooms, and the kitchen and sitting room are divided by a decked area through which an ancient mangaba tree grows, perfuming the air with it’s sweet scented fruit and flowers. Built around the trunk of the mangaba is a hard wood table seating up to eight and offering a wonderful outside dining experience.
The house is surrounded by a hillside garden filled with flowers and trees offering welcome shade from the sun, as well as an organic kitchen garden for those interested in cooking.
The house comes with a staff of 2 housekeepers and a caretaker/ gardener. A cook can be arranged at extra cost.
The villa is composed of two houses – the main house higher up the hillside and the guesthouse further down.
The main house is split over two levels. The ground floor has an open plan kitchen with a round table with seating for eight and is fully equipped with hobs, oven, fridge/freezer, UV filtered drinking water, Vitamix blender and everything else you need to prepare a feast or just a snack. There is also the option to eat at the table on the veranda under the mangaba tree. Across the deck from the kitchen is the sitting room with sofa and chairs built from recycled boat wood and a projector and screen for watching films in the evening. There are also a selection of books in English, board games and toys. There is also a bathroom with loo and sink and a laundry room on the ground floor.
A wooden staircase takes you to the second level where the bedrooms are located. The master bedroom has a super king size double bed, antique wardrobe, chest and clothes hanging area. Adjacent is an en suite bathroom with shower, loo and bidet. The second bedroom has two single beds and hanging/ storage area. The third bedroom has a queen size double bed and hanging/ storage area. Both bedrooms share a bathroom with shower, sink and toilet. The upstairs veranda offers panoramic views over the beach, ocean and forests of Boipeba.
The main house can sleep 6 adults plus 2 young children or babies.
The guesthouse is ideal for a couple and can also accommodate a young child. This can be rented by itself or together with the main house. It is lower down the hill from the main house and very private, surrounded by hibiscus flowers and shaded by a large mango tree. The house contains one bedroom with a queen size double bed, a desk and chair, walk in wardrobe and en suite bathroom with shower, toilet and sink. Outside the bedroom is a small decked terrace with a hammock. Next-door is a small kitchen with solid wood counter, gas hobs, fridge freezer and sink. There is a small dining room table with seating for up to four. The kitchen is open on two sides and offers glimpses of the ocean through the trees.

Founded by Jesuits in 1537, Boipeba is one of the oldest sites in Bahia colonized by the Portuguese. There are four villages found on the island - Velha Boipeba, São Sebastião, Moreré, and Monte Alegre. The only access is by water - sea or river transport. River boats are used more frequently than boats on the open sea, as the calm waters of the estuary offer more safety for travelers. At the same time, river access can be made more difficult due to shallow waters and sandbanks which need to be expertly navigated.
No cars are permitted on the island - all transport is on foot or by tractor. This helps to protect the environment and to promote ecologically minded tourism. People get from one farm or village to another by boat or by using the local trails.
Villa do Sol located just outside the village of Moreré on the island of Boipeba in Bahia, Brazil. Boipeba island is part of the municipality of Cairu, an archipelago of 32 islands scattered throughout an area of protected coastal mangrove. The island measures twelve kilometers long by five wide and despite its small size has a rich and varied natural heritage including Atlantic rainforest, mangrove forest and dry sandy plains where the iconic mangaba trees grow. The village of Moreré on the Atlantic side of the island is situated on perhaps the most beautiful coastal area of Boipeba. Three palm fringed beaches offer an almost continuous five kilometres of white sand and blue sea, all ringed by a corral reef, rich in sea life and perfect for diving and snorkeling.
Exploring on foot
The island is 12km by 5km and there is good trekking along the beaches and sandy roads that connect the villages as well as numerous trails that crisscross the island and are best explored with a local guide.
Swimming, snorkeling, diving and spear fishing
Moreré is ideal for swimming. At high tide you have a large area inside the reef with an average depth of 1.5m and a gentle incline. It’s perfect for adults and children alike. At low tide you can walk to the reef where large pools allow a wonderful dip and the chance to snorkel and see multicoloured coral fish. For even better snorkeling you can hire a canoe and visit the “piscinas naturais” (natural reef pools) at Bainema or Castellhanos.
Beyond the reef is fantastic for diving and spear fishing. The sea is rich in barracuda and a host of other fish and in summer the water is crystal clear.
Surfing, sailing and boating
There are numerous options for boat hire. Paddle boards are available for rent on the main beach of Moreré. The beach of Bainema offers great surfing and we have two surfboards - long wide boards which are ideal for adults who are not experts and also for children starting out.
There are still many traditional Bahian canoes in Moreré and a number that have sails. We highly recommend hiring one and sailing (with a local skipper) to the Bainema pools. It’s a magical experience.
Speedboats are available for small local trips as well as longer journeys to Morro de Sao Paolo or Barra Grande to the south.
Electrical energy is 220 volts, and is brought to the island by underground cables.
Velha Boipeba, with Santo Antônio Square at its center, is the most important village on the island, with a population of about 1.800. Fishing has traditionally been the primary economic activity, although there has been a great increase in tourism in the last 10 years.
The Church of the Holy Spirit is the historic monument of greatest importance, dating back to the 17th century.

The house comes with a domestic staff of 4, none of whom speak English. The team includes two maids, a gardener /caretaker.
A good local cook can be arranged for an extra charge and should be requested at the time you make the reservation.
TRANSFERS TO THE VILLA
The nearest airport is at Salvador da Bahia which receives both international flights from the US and Europe as well as many daily flights from all major Brazilian cities.
From there, the fun begins. There are several alternatives to get to the Island of Boipeba:
- The quickest and most direct is to take a charter flight or air taxi (which are most reliable from December – end of Carnival as they require 5 passengers as a minimum to fly the route) from Salvador straight to Boipeba. It is a very scenic 30 minute flight. As there are no cars on the island the transfer to the house is by tractor or speedboat (both take approx.. 25 minutes)
- By Car and speedboat. The first part of the journey is to take the ferry service from Salvador to the Island of Itaparica where a driver will be waiting for you for the land part of the crossing as far as Graciosa. There you will get in a speedboat for the final leg of the journey to Boipeba. Total journey time is about 4 hours.
