This is a really great family house and it works particularly well for families travelling with young children. The house is set just outside the village facing the towering Por do Sol Dune where dozens climb each evening to marvel at the spectacular sunsets, which is a quieter than being in town, despite being only a short walk into the village for drinks or dinner.

The house is split over two floors and the rooms and living areas are bright, clean and flooded with sunshine. On the ground floor there is a fully equipped open-plan kitchen that opens on a living area with a wall that retracts to connect the whole of the ground floor living space with a small garden ringed by magenta and white bougainvillea. Two bedrooms on the ground floor share a bathroom, including a children’s room with a bunk bed.

On the first floor are two larger suites accessed via the internal spiral staircase, one which can be set up with either twin beds or a queen-size double bed. The master suite is 45m2 and has a great view of the dunes from a lovely terrace where there is a hammock and a day bed that makes having a siesta a must. All bedrooms are air-conditioned and have fans.

The kitchen is inviting and most guests will end up preparing some of their own meals as the open plan set up makes it an integral part of the house. A good local cook can be arranged on request and meals can also be order a-la room service from the hotel next door, which does good sandwiches, grills and salads. Caipirinhas can also be ordered in, or we can stock the bar and fridge before arrival so your favourite drinks are waiting for you.

Guests also have use of the hotel’s pool and infrastructure and the staff will be happy to arrange massages, book surf lessons or make restaurant reservations as and when required.

Area description

Jericoacoara is a small village located between the dunes and the sea around 300 km west of Fortaleza in the far NE of Brazil. Jericoacoara – or Jeri as most visitors come to refer to it - is a place removed from the hurried modern world of screeching sirens, endless deadlines, traffic jams and the demands of cell phones, email. A place where the streets are made of sand, where the beaches and mighty sand dunes stretch as far as the eye can see and where warm sea water marries with palm swaying breezes.

Until about 20 or so years ago, Jericoacoara was still almost unheard of, a secluded and simple fishing village with no roads, no electricity, no phones, no TV's, and where money was rarely used. Since then word has been leaking out, firstly due in part to Jeri being named on of the World’s ‘Top Ten Beaches’ by a Washington Post Article in 1984, but in large part due to the ideal conditions the village and surrounding coastline offers wind and kite surfers. Today Jeri is well known as one of the world’s best wind-surfing destinations, but it’s charm is not limited to die-hard water sport enthusiasts and today it is an ideal destinations for families, beach-combers looking for somewhere new and surfers alike.

Days are spent either spent soaking up rays on the beach (the weather is great pretty much year round) or skimming over the sea or kite or windsurfing, but there is much to keep children entertained and it is a great destination for beginners and experts alike when it comes to surfing, kiting and wind-surfing, kayaking and Stand Up Paddle (SUP) and lessons can be arranged locally at the excellent Club de Ventos. Equipment can be hired locally too for all sports mentioned.

Each evening visitors and locals gather on the large dune near town to watch the sun set into the ocean before heading back to the village for cocktails and impromptu capoeira demonstrations before heading out to dinner at a number of excellent, unpretentious local restaurants. The sandy streets, little low-lit bars and ice-cream parlors and the chords of live music that reverberate throughout the heart of the village great a gentle feeling of escape from the bustle of the modern world that is impossible to resisit.

Since 1984, the area around Jericoacoara was declared Environmental Protection Area (APA) and became a National Park in 2002. Electricity arrived in the village and today, hot showers and air conditioning are no longer luxury articles. However, street lighting is still forbidden by local law which makes for the most incredible night skies.

Until quite recently accommodation was limited to pretty simple pousadas and small hotels but the last few years has seen a number of more upmarket hotels and inns open in Jeri including a sister hotel to Tarifa’s excellent Hurricane Hotel. However since February 2015, BBH has worked with the owners of 4 amazing private houses (two of which have only just been completed) to be able to offer fully staffed, luxurious private accommodation in the Village for the first times thus opening Jeri to a whole new range of visitors who like to enjoy the best of live even in the most far flung destinations.

Getting There:
The most comfortable way to get to Jericoacoara is to get a chauffeur driver 4x4 (Toyota Hilux or similar) from Fortaleza Airport. The last 45 minutes of the drive is the most spectacular when you turn on to sandy tracks from the main road, completing the last part of the journey along the beach. Travel times is approximately 4 hours from Fortaleza.

Outside of the house, we can arrange wind-surf and kite-surf instruction and equipment hire; surf classes and equipment hire; SUP hire, buggy rental and tours. All of this is best arranged in advance.

The nearest airport to Jeri is in Fortaleza and the journey to the village takes about 4 hours. The last part of the journey requires the use of a 4x4. It is important that transfers are arranged in advance with a trusted driver and we will do this for you, normally using late model Toyota Hilux Pick-up trucks.

To make your arrival at the property as relaxing as possible, we suggest we stock the kitchen with a customized grocery shop prior to your trip. This means that you will arrive to a kitchen full of food, a fridge full of cold drinks and that the first meal can be served shortly after your arrival. This is particularly important to do in Jeri as there are no ATM machines in the village. A small charge will be made for this service.
