We walked past this property several times constantly wanting to scramble over the wall and see what was inside, as it is a real one-off in the heart of the village that is otherwise dominated by hotels, restaurants and smaller local dwellings. The villa is perfect for those who want to be within walking distance of the beach, the dunes and the many excellent restaurants, bars and ice-cream parlors dotted along Jeri’s sandy streets.

The main house is set back from the street and it is here you first arrive on entry. The ground floor has an open plan and well-equipped kitchen that opens onto the sitting room to one side and onto a wide terrace with dining table, outdoor sofas and a BBQ. Steps lead down to the garden and pool and it is pleasantly lit in the evenings for dinners and drinks under star-studded skies.

There are three bedrooms in the main house divided over the two upper floors. On the first floor there is a double room and a twin-bedded room that share a bathroom, and on the top (second) floor is a master suite with a king-sized bed, walk-in closet, a good sized bathroom and its own terrace with views of the dunes over the rooftops of the village.

The annex is located in a separate smaller house at the far end of the pool and contains four bedrooms – a double and a twin – on both the ground and first floors, which share one bathroom per floor. This house also has a small kitchen, which is ideal for breakfast and snacks and storing cold drinks.

Daily maid service is included and the maid will make breakfast each day. Other services can be arranged as required including a good local cook, babysitters, yoga and massage.

Area description

Jericoacoara is a small village located between the dunes and the sea around 300 km west of Fortaleza in the far NE of Brazil. Jericoacoara – or Jeri as most visitors come to refer to it - is a place removed from the hurried modern world of screeching sirens, endless deadlines, traffic jams and the demands of cell phones, email. A place where the streets are made of sand, where the beaches and mighty sand dunes stretch as far as the eye can see and where warm sea water marries with palm swaying breezes.

Until about 20 or so years ago, Jericoacoara was still almost unheard of, a secluded and simple fishing village with no roads, no electricity, no phones, no TV's, and where money was rarely used. Since then word has been leaking out, firstly due in part to Jeri being named on of the World’s ‘Top Ten Beaches’ by a Washington Post Article in 1984, but in large part due to the ideal conditions the village and surrounding coastline offers wind and kite surfers. Today Jeri is well known as one of the world’s best wind-surfing destinations, but it’s charm is not limited to die-hard water sport enthusiasts and today it is an ideal destinations for families, beach-combers looking for somewhere new and surfers alike.

Days are spent either spent soaking up rays on the beach (the weather is great pretty much year round) or skimming over the sea or kite or windsurfing, but there is much to keep children entertained and it is a great destination for beginners and experts alike when it comes to surfing, kiting and wind-surfing, kayaking and Stand Up Paddle (SUP) and lessons can be arranged locally at the excellent Club de Ventos. Equipment can be hired locally too for all sports mentioned.

Each evening visitors and locals gather on the large dune near town to watch the sun set into the ocean before heading back to the village for cocktails and impromptu capoeira demonstrations before heading out to dinner at a number of excellent, unpretentious local restaurants. The sandy streets, little low-lit bars and ice-cream parlors and the chords of live music that reverberate throughout the heart of the village great a gentle feeling of escape from the bustle of the modern world that is impossible to resisit.

Since 1984, the area around Jericoacoara was declared Environmental Protection Area (APA) and became a National Park in 2002. Electricity arrived in the village and today, hot showers and air conditioning are no longer luxury articles. However, street lighting is still forbidden by local law which makes for the most incredible night skies.

Until quite recently accommodation was limited to pretty simple pousadas and small hotels but the last few years has seen a number of more upmarket hotels and inns open in Jeri including a sister hotel to Tarifa’s excellent Hurricane Hotel. However since February 2015, BBH has worked with the owners of 4 amazing private houses (two of which have only just been completed) to be able to offer fully staffed, luxurious private accommodation in the Village for the first times thus opening Jeri to a whole new range of visitors who like to enjoy the best of live even in the most far flung destinations.

Getting There:
The most comfortable way to get to Jericoacoara is to get a chauffeur driver 4x4 (Toyota Hilux or similar) from Fortaleza Airport. The last 45 minutes of the drive is the most spectacular when you turn on to sandy tracks from the main road, completing the last part of the journey along the beach. Travel times is approximately 4 hours from Fortaleza.

Daily maid service is included and the maid will make breakfast for guests each day.

When the house is full we recommend hiring an extra maid to help out with laundry. Other services can be arranged as required, including a good local cook, babysitters, yoga and massage.

Outside of the house, we can arrange wind-surf and kite-surf instruction and equipment hire; surf classes and equipment hire; SUP hire and buggy rental. All of this is best arranged in advance.

The nearest airport to Jeri is in Fortaleza and the journey to the village takes about 4 hours. The last part of the journey requires the use of a 4x4. It is important that transfers are arranged in advance with a trusted driver and we will do this for you, normally using late model Toyota Hilux Pick up trucks.

To make your arrival at the property as relaxing as possible, we suggest we stock the kitchen with a customized grocery shop prior to your trip. This means that you will arrive to a kitchen full of food, a fridge full of cold drinks and that the first meal can be served shortly after your arrival. This is particularly important to do in Jeri as there are no ATM machines in the village. A small charge will be made for this service.

Best Bits

  • 50 meters from the beach and in the heart of the village. Close to a great choice of restaurants, shops and bars
  • An excellent option for larger parties at a very good rate
  • Jeri offers some of the best wind-surfing in the world, as well as great kite-surfing and surfing
  • Great destination for families who like to be active

Bear in Mind

  • There are no ATM machines in Jericoacoara and while many businesses accept credit cards it is important to bring enough cash with you
  • The remote location has its effect and internet can be slow, cell phone signal patchy, and the choice of supermarket goods and wines is limited
  • Jeri takes a little bit of getting to (4 hours from the nearest airport) so you should take this into account when making travel plans and booking flights
